Fundamentals of Construction Management
Welcome to our Construction Management certificate course.
Course Description
Learn the principles of Construction Management from a subject matter expert and take your career to the next level. The virtual modality of this course allows you to learn and engage from anywhere in the world or from the comfort of your own home. This course is designed for professionals in the construction field who want to manage projects of all sizes effectively. With weekly modules focused on planning, estimating, scheduling, procurement, contracts, and much more, this course provides the skills to efficiently manage people, materials, and equipment. Our course meets the needs of professionals working across the industry who are interested in moving into management roles.
Modality and Structure
This course is virtual and hybrid (synchronous and asynchronous). The majority of the work will be conducted asynchronously through our learning platform. However, there will be mandatory virtual monthly class meetings, during which you can expect to interact with the professor and fellow students.
The virtual monthly meetings will occur on June 19, July 10, August 7, September 4, and October 2.
Student Engagement and Participation
The course is rigorous and requires attendance, participation, and assignment submission. Please allot time for readings and/or video reviews and completing assignments.
Pre-requisite(s)
Registrants must have basic skills in Microsoft Excel and Word (such as creating and utilizing a spreadsheet and maneuvering columns and rows). If a refresher on that subject is needed, please review videos on YouTube and/or LinkedIn Learning.
Certificate of Completion
The Fundamentals of Construction Management course leads to a Certificate of Completion for those who complete the 15-week course. Successful completion requires a minimum passing grade of 70% for this course.

This module introduces the core construction documents essential for effective project management, including drawings, specifications, and building codes.
This module introduces the student to the basics of construction scheduling and project planning.
This module introduces the student to basic estimating and bidding practices and how projects are awarded.
This module explores the way contractors and suppliers are evaluated and hired
This module explores the most common materials used in the construction process to include installation methods
This module explores the different mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and fire protection systems and how they are managed.
This module introduces the student to the basic structural systems used by design engineers.
This module explores the role of soils and foundations and how they are designed to support the various building loads.
The module introduces the student to the various temporary scopes of work necessary to build a project.
The module discusses how to manage subcontractors.
This module introduces the student to the various project control tools to include accounting and billing procedures.
This module explores the role of site mobilization and project logistics.
This module discusses the role of the Owner, architect, and design engineers to include project completion and closeout.
This module discussed project safety and health.
The module introduces the concepts of quality assurance and quality control for construction projects.
Program Director and Primary Instructor
Dr. Michael Emmer received his B.S. in Construction Management, Suma Cum Laude, from Wentworth Institute of Technology in Boston in 2002, his M.S. in Construction Science and Management from Clemson University in South Carolina in 2004 and his Ph.D. from the University of Florida’s College of Design, Construction, and Planning in Gainesville in 2009. His areas of research and interest are sustainable construction with a focus in material extraction/reuse and deconstruction, estimating, and is also active in promoting and exploring owner training and productivity in the AEC industry. He has been teaching full-time for over ten years, and, before that, worked in the construction industry for over 25 years in a variety of positions including laborer, carpenter, carpenter foreman, superintendent, project manager, and owner’s representative.
Dr. Emmer is a member of the American Council for Construction Education (ACCE) as a trustee, the American Society of Home Inspectors (ASHI), United States Green Building Council (USGBC), City of Attleboro Planning Board & Historical Commission, Association for the Advancement of Cost Engineering (AACE), and Housing Works of Rhode Island (HWRI) board of directors.
